We traveled to South Lake Tahoe from Las Vegas, Nevada to escape the heat, explore South Lake Tahoe and of course, check out gluten free restaurants. Fortunately, there are plenty of Celiac safe restaurants, and plenty to do in South Lake Tahoe. We visited South Lake Tahoe at the beginning of June and enjoyed 2 full days of sun. It rained on our last day there, and we were still able to find fun indoor activities. We stayed near Stateline, and enjoyed both sides of Nevada and California.
To begin, we had nearly an 8-hour drive to South Lake Tahoe, so I packed a gluten free sandwich, fruit, and a lot of Gluten Free Bob’s Red Mill Oatmeal. Whenever I travel, I always pack a lot of Bob’s gluten-free oatmeal. It’s very convenient — quick, easy, and filling.
By the time we arrived at South Lake Tahoe, it was dinner time. We ate at Azul Latin Kitchen which is in The Shops at Heavenly Village. We enjoyed our meal on the patio with a live band. Azul Latin Kitchen is a festive restaurant that focuses on fresh ingredients. It is not 100% gluten-free, but there is plenty of gluten-free options, and they are extra cautious when it comes to celiac disease and allergies. They have a gluten-free menu with orange wheat symbols next to menu options that are not safe for celiacs.
At Azul Latin Kitchen, I ordered the Three Taco Plate with Shrimp, Rice, & Beans.

We ended our first night watching the sunset and touring the city on Lime E-scooters. (Highly recommend!)
The first morning in South Lake Tahoe, we ate at a small outdoor coffee and breakfast restaurant called, Black Cabin Coffee. At Black Cabin Coffee, customers order at a small window and eat outside on a small patio area. It is located in the middle of a calm neighborhood and parking may be limited. Black Cabin Coffee is not 100% gluten-free, but they were very accommodating and understanding.
I ordered the Sam Breakfast Sandwich with gluten-free bread and the De La Rosa Mazapan Latte. After researching the ingredients in a De La Rosa cookie, I discovered there are no gluten-containing ingredients, however, it is not labeled gluten-free.

Parking: There are limited parking spaces as it is in a neighborhood. There is room behind Black Cabin Coffee on the side of the street near the patio area for parking. (5-6 cars)
After Black Cabin Coffee, we ventured to Emerald Bay State Park and hiked up to Eagle Lake. If you are an avid hiker, this hike was fairly easy. Otherwise, I’d consider it a moderate hike.
After the hike, we went to the local Smith’s and grabbed some gluten-free snacks to eat while we freshened up for dinner. For dinner, we went to Freshies Ohana Restaurant & Bar. Freshies is a Hawaiian-themed restaurant, with inside and outside dining. They have gluten-free fried food that is cooked in dedicated gluten-free fryers. They also have non-gluten-free options but are very knowledgeable when it comes to gluten allergies and celiac disease.
We ordered Crispy Orange Chicken Wings as an appetizer. As an entree, I ordered Fish n’ Chips that came with fried shrimp, gluten-free fries, and cole slaw.

Parking: Freshies is located inside Lakeview Plaza and there is parking in front of the plaza.
Our last morning in South Lake Tahoe was spent at The Social House. The Social House is a fun, crafty sandwich shop located at The Shops at Heavenly Village. They have gluten-free options that are cooked separately and a friendly staff that is more than happy to help ensure you have a celiac-safe meal.
I ordered the Wake Up Call Bagel with gluten-free bread and a white mocha hot coffee. Both the food and coffee were delicious.

For lunch, we went to the sister company of The Social House which is called California Burger Company. California Burger Company is next door to The Social House and is just as good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have gluten-free options and take the necessary precautions to avoid cross-contact.
I ordered the Californian burger with the gluten-free bun and gluten-free french fries.

We ended our trip with dessert at The Baked Bear at The Shops at Heavenly Village. The Baked Bear is an ice cream sandwich shop. They have gluten-containing items but had the gluten-free cookies in a separate area than the gluten-containing items. The staff was very accommodating and nice. They changed their gloves and retrieved my ice cream from a fresh container in the back
I ordered a gluten-free vanilla ice cream sandwich.

Parking: The Baked Bear is also at The Shops at Heavenly Village so there is parking at the South Lake Tahoe Public Parking on Bellamy Ct.
All of the restaurants we went to had great food and service. While we were able to try many different restaurants, I’m sure there is more that we did not have time to try. South Lake Tahoe is a great place to vacation, hike, bike ride, etc. When it rained, we mini golfed, went axe throwing, and found fun arcades.
I did not get sick or experience any symptoms after eating at the restaurants but it is important to do your own research and eat with your own caution.
