Tacos are popular in the celiac disease community. They are typically gluten free when made with corn tortillas and in a safe environment.
Not only are tacos a yummy meal on any occasion, there are various ways you can make them. Additionally, they are quick and easy to make. While they are delicious, gluten free, and simple to make, oftentimes, they are not healthy ― high in fat, sodium, and sugar, with processed ingredients. Of course this depends on what condiments, sauces, meats, seasonings, tortillas, sides, etc. are used. How great would it be if you could still enjoy tacos and adjust the recipe to ensure all ingredients are healthy? Luckily, you can!
Here is how to make gluten free, healthy tacos. This recipe is low in fat, sodium, and sugar.
Side note: you will notice I use Siete’s food products quite often. While this post is not sponsored by Siete, I am a huge advocate for the company as they offer high quality, gluten free food products that are made with clean, healthy ingredients.
Ingredients needed:
- Meat of choice
- Siete tortillas
- Siete seasoning
- Siete sauce
- Siete chips
- Plain greek yogurt
- Lettuce
- Onion
- Tomatoes
- Cilantro
- Avocado
Choice of Protein
Typically, I use lean ground turkey for my choice of meat. However, there are many different options to choose from for your choice of protein. Here is a list:
- Lean ground turkey
- Lean ground beef
- Lean ground bison (higher in fat)
- Shrimp
- Gardein plant based ground beef
Tortillas
You might think tortillas are not that bad for you, but unfortunately a majority of them are ― with preservatives and additives that can cause inflammation. Luckily, Siete offers gluten free tortillas with very clean ingredients such as: cassava flour and coconut oil. Siete has a handful of different gluten free tortillas in both taco and burrito sizes. Here is Siete’s tortilla options:
- Grain free burrito size tortillas
- Almond flour tortillas
- Cassava flour tortillas
- Chickpea flour tortillas
Seasoning
Siete also has a gluten free seasoning selection that has clean ingredients and the seasonings taste amazing! I use the Siete seasoning for taco night and the tacos do not disappoint. Siete offers both a mild seasoning and a spicy seasoning.
Sauces
What is a taco without condiments and sauce/salsa? Again, I use Siete’s gluten free sauces and drizzle it over my tacos to add a little spice. My personal favorite is the Jalapeno Botana Sauce. They also have:
Chips
A great side to taco night besides rice and beans is tortilla chips. Fortunately, the majority of store-bought tortillas chips are naturally gluten free. However, they contain oils and preservatives, which may cause inflammation in the gut. There is a healthier option with cleaner ingredients and great flavor. I’m sure you have guessed the brand by now ― Siete! Siete has several different gluten free flavored chips, including tortilla chips ― perfect for taco night.
Here is a list of a few flavors Siete has to offer:
- No salt grain free tortilla chips
- Sea salt grain free tortilla chips
- Lime grain free tortilla chips
- Fuego grain free tortilla chips
- Jalapeno lime grain free tortilla chips
Toppings
There are many different toppings you can use to enhance your gluten free tacos. Depending on your preference, you may add tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce, onion, bell peppers, and even top the tacos with a scoop of plain greek yogurt. Plain greek yogurt is gluten free and a great sour cream alternative. Plain greek yogurt is low in fat, high in protein, does not have preservatives, and oils ― it is healthy, gluten free, and tastes very similar to sour cream. If you are vegan, substitute sour cream with a plain vegan yogurt.
